THE WOMEN PRODUCERS OF PANORAMA MUSIC FESTIVAL: PART II

Welcome to Part II of our three-part series that spotlights, highlights, and gives you the lowdown on the women producers who will be playing at Panorama Music Festival in New York City this coming weekend.

Starting this Friday at 2:00pm, women producers from all over will be taking over New York City. These women producers will be showcasing their talents at The Point, Panorama’s own open-air dance club, and each is primed to make waves in her own way.

Last week, we looked more in depth at Avalon Emerson, Bearcat, and DJ Haram. We continue to dive a little deeper into the music and the lives of the women producers of Panorama Music Festival. Today, it is time to get to know Helena Hauff, Jay Som, Jlin, and Laurel Halo.

Helena Hauff

German DJ and producer Helena Hauff sets herself apart from many other music producers in that she strictly uses analog. While her musical influences tend to be in the vein of digital music production, such as EDM and house music, her physics and music science backgrounds make her one talented individual when behind the soundboard. In December of 2017, Helena Hauff was awarded Essential Mix of the Year by BBC 1 Radio; she was the first woman producer/DJ to ever be named as such. Hauff is proud to have infiltrated the former ‘boys’ club’ of underground electronic music, and in a conversation with The Guardian, she praised women producers across the board: “every woman who goes out and does whatever she wants to do, and makes music and DJs and is visible, helps to make a change and make a difference.”

She writes. She sings. She records. She plays the guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and trumpet. And she produces all of her own music. Jay Som, also known as Melina Duterte, is the queer Asian-American powerhouse whose musical style subverts and defies all genres, incorporating elements of bedroom-pop, indie-pop, DIY, and classical analog skills.  As she has navigated the music industry in her rise to fame, she has simultaneously pushed for greater representation of women, people of color, and LGBTQIA folk within the industry. In short, Jay Som does it all, and she does it with a dazzling, undeniable flare.

Jlin

Hailing from Gary, Indiana is an unprecedented innovator who paves the path and redefines what is possible in electronic music. Jlin, one of the most prominent and talented women producers of our time, has landed spotlight pieces in Rolling Stone, the Fader, SPIN, and more. Many define her artistic creations as “avant-garde dance music,” constantly pushing boundaries and exploring uncharted territory in production. Her creations are unpredictable, wild, and adventurous. Jlin’s most recent release, Black Origami, epitomizes her innovation and fearless distinctiveness.

Laurel Halo

Michigan-born and now Berlin-based DJ and producer Laurel Halo has released three comprehensive, equally unique and moody albums since 2012, with her debut album Quarantine being named Album of the Year by Wire Magazine. Getting her start as a local DJ on a popular radio station based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Laurel Halo continues to showcase her talents on the radio at Berlin Community Radio. Her production is hypnotic and disorienting at times, but Laurel Halo believes that music creation, for her, is a process of self-healing.

Panorama Music Festival will be held this weekend, July 27th-29th, on Randall’s Island in New York City. These four women will be playing sets over the span of the three days. Get your tickets to Panorama here to support the talented women producers of Panorama.
