THE THRILLING DJ FEI-FEI

Los Angeles-based DJ Fei-Fei is a woman of many names and many talents. Music has always been an integral element in her life, being trained in classical piano at a young age. Once she realized that her instrument of choice was the turntable and not the piano, DJ Fei-Fei truly came into her own.

Celebrated and known for her techno and trance productions, DJ Fei-Fei started off performing at parties held by her friends in Madison, Wisconsin. What was once a passion smoothly transformed into a future and a career. DJ Fei-Fei could not be kept from the turntable, and so she embraced her career as a multi-faceted creative with tenacity and excitement.

In 2014, DJ Fei-Fei released Pretty Girls Don’t Hallucinate, an electronic album infused with hints of R&B. This album went on to climb to #13 on iTunes for electronic music.

Masterfully utilizing a hybrid of styles, this writer, producer, engineer, and artist thrives off her independence and self-determination. Craving and flourishing off of creative control and freedom, DJ Fei-Fei started her own imprint, Feided, in 2010. Just recently, DJ Fei-Fei created the indie/post-punk/electronica project THRILL YOU KILL YOU. The entire project is written, produced, and engineered solely by Fei-Fei!

THRILL YOU KILL YOU exposes a whole new side to this genre-bending DJ and producer. This evolution of her sound reveals a more vulnerable and rebellious side — the entire project is written, produced and engineered by herself. Catching up with Gender Amplified, DJ Fei-Fei exclaimed, “I’m proud that I recorded vocals in my bathroom on a cheap mic. It’s weird, it’s raw and a little twisted, but it’s all me.”

As a woman producer, DJ Fei-Fei actively seeks out other women creatives with whom she collaborates. One prominent collaborator is Jessie Andrews, a designer, producer, model, DJ, entrepreneur and photographer, who also happens to be DJ Fei-Fei’s neighbor and best friend. The two paired up to deliver a remix of Blood Orange’s “You’re Not Good Enough,” and the result is a perfect mixture of Andrews’ tropical house vibes and DJ Fei-Fei’s hard-hitting bass.

In an article-interview with Westwood, DJ Fei-Fei elaborated on the importance of women producers and creatives working together: “The world needs more recognition for female producers, engineers and DIY role models. The industry needs to change. The more of us that can get out there to challenge the status quo, the better. But it’s also up to the gatekeepers to create a more equitable landscape. There’s plenty of us — empowered and ready to take an equal role, but there’s still many obstacles. Gender is not a genre.

“We need more progressive organizations and institutions like Women Fuck Shit Up Fest, Play Like A Girl, FeM Synth Lab, Ableton’s Womxn meet-ups, Unspeakable Records, Sound Girls, Discwoman, She Said So, Gender Amplified, The 7% Series, Girls Rock Santa Barbara, Women in Music, Nap Girls, and Beats by Girlz that support the next generation of talented female artists.”

THRILL YOU KILL YOU is releasing an EP later this year. TYKY just dropped her first single, accompanied by a video, for the song “Never Even Really.” You can listen to it below.
