CHLOE X HALLE: SUPERIOR SISTERS
Two sisters tapped into their passion for music, singing, and culture by posting covers of Beyoncé, Lorde, Rihanna, John Legend and more on their YouTube channel. Six years ago, the striking and charming sisters, who now go by the name of Chloe x Halle, posted their first cover video. In those short years, Chloe x Halle have amassed over 78 million views on YouTube, over 1 million followers on Instagram, and recognition from acclaimed artists, especially Beyoncé.
When the sisters were just 13 and 15 years old, they released a cover of Beyoncé’s “Pretty Hurts” on YouTube that immediately went viral, gaining praise from young and adult listeners alike, as well as Beyoncé herself and a various array of recording labels. Beyoncé loved the authenticity, rawness, and soul of Chloe x Halle, and the sisters quickly became one of three young female acts who were signed to Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment label. They were given even more recognition after they were included in Beyoncé’s hour-long masterpiece that was the Lemonade visual album.

The sisters epitomize the concept and movement of Black Girl Magic. Chloe and Halle are beautifully and unapologetically themselves; each sister embraces her own artistic and aesthetic style, and when the two come together, they create a beautiful marriage of soulfulness and stridency. As Halle fills the space with her dreamy softness, Chloe complements with an intense vibrato.
Fast forward to today: Chloe is about to turn 20, and her sister, Halle, is 18-years old. In March of 2017, the duo released “The Two of Us,” a non-album, non-mixtape, non-EP creation of artistic genius. The two sisters co-wrote and co-produced the entire 25-minute stroke of musical beauty, and they take great pride in their self-sufficiency and determination. In an interview with Vulture, Chloe poignantly spoke about defying expectations: “There has been underestimation at the front door, and that’s bound to be there since our appearance is these small, young girls. Most people just expect you to go in and write a Disney song. It’s fun for us to prove ourselves. Once we put our foot in the door and shove it open, it’s exciting for us to see people’s reaction. They realize that we can do this.”
In March of 2018, the superior sisters released their debut album The Kids are Alright. Chloe x Halle prove that young girls, particularly young black girls, can carve out their own space in the music industry and do it with passion, finesse, beauty, and joy. Through the duo’s creation and production of their own music, Chloe x Halle have proved time and time again, that they are more than ‘Alright.’
